Dr. Rick Jones Named
Superintendent Designee

The school board has voted to name Dr. Rick Jones as the superintendent designee.

The board president will now begin a process of negotiating a contract with Dr. Jones that will need to be brought to the board for approval.

Dr. Jones has been superintendent of the 4,000 student Burlington-Edison School District since 1998. Previously he was superintendent of the Ocosta School District from 1992-1998, and assistant superintendent in the Omak School District from 1989 to 1992. His prior professional experience includes being an elementary principal, high school assistant principal, athletic director and teacher.

Jones received his Doctor of Education degree and Continuing Superintendent Certification from Washington State University. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Education and Master of Education Administration degrees from Western Washington University.

This week, May 4-10 is Teacher  Appreciation Week. On behalf of the North Kitsap School District Board of Directors, administrative team, classified staff, students, PTSAs and families, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for the significant contribution our teachers are making daily to students and their learning in North Kitsap School District. We thank each one of them for choosing to be teachers.

Kindergarten Registration
May 5-9
All Elementary Schools

Kindergarten registration will be held at all North Kitsap elementary schools May 5- 9, from 9:30-3:00 p.m.,
and on the following evenings at these elementary schools:

Breidablik – May 7, 4 – 7 p.m.
Gordon – May 7, 4 – 7 p.m.
Gordon will also have a
kindergarten open house in room B4 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. on May 7 for parents and children.

Pearson – May 6, 4 – 7 p.m.               
Poulsbo – May 8, 4 – 7 p.m.
Suquamish – May 7, 5 – 7 p.m.
Vinland – May 7, 5 – 7 p.m.
Wolfle – May 7, 5:00 - 6:30 p.m. Wolfle will also have an opportunity for parents
 to meet the kindergarten teachers during this time.

Please bring your child’s birth certificate or other proof-of-age document, immunization record, doctor name and phone number,
and names and phone numbers of two emergency contacts.

Full day kindergarten
Applications for full-day kindergarten will be available at all elementary schools. Since the state only funds kindergarten for half a day, tuition is charged for the remainder of the school day in order to cover costs. A deposit of $25 must be paid at the time of registration, but will be refunded if there are not enough students to fill a class. Tuition for next school year will be $3,125.  A limited number of scholarships will be available for qualifying families.

Superintendent Finalists Chosen

Richard Jones, Superintendent of the Burlington-Edison School District in Washington, and Mary Vedra, Executive Director for Learning Services for the Arapahoe County School District in Englewood, Colorado, have been selected as finalists for the position of Superintendent in the North Kitsap School District.

Following candidate tours of the district and an interview process with the board on May 1, the board is currently deliberating what their next steps will be in choosing a new superintendent.


English For Speakers of Other Languages
Olympic College is offering classes in Bremerton, Poulsbo, Belfair and Shelton to non-native English speakers.
The goal is to improve their English listening comprehension, reading, writing and speaking skills.
