2011 Fall Sports Recap:
Congratulations to the following teams and coaches for their accomplishments this fall:
Cross Country: As has become a tradition at KHS, our boys and girls teams had fantastic seasons, garnering attention at the state level throughout the year. Our boys took 3rd in league and 8th at districts while our girls won the league championship, took 2nd at districts, and 7th at state. In addition, Marina Roberts finished 3rd as an individual at the state meet held in Pasco. Coach Karla Laubach was selected as Coach of the Year in the Olympic League.
Football: For the second year in a row, the KHS football team advanced to the 2A playoffs. After starting the season 3-3, the team finished the regular season with consecutive wins over Bremerton, North Mason, and North Kitsap to finish 6-3. Although the team lost its first home playoff game in school history to Steilacoom, its 2nd place finish in the Olympic League was its best ever. The following players earned All-Olympic League recognition: Sam Byers (Offensive MVP at QB, 2nd Team DB), Bobby Reece (1st Team DB, Honorable Mention KR/PR), Joe Shoemaker (1st Team DL, Honorable Mention OL), Jack Welker (1st Team OL), George Marinan (2nd Team LB, 2nd Team TE), Tucker Burns (Honorable Mention DL), Walker Larson (Honorable Mention DL), Aaron Dickson (Honorable Mention LB), Lee Pham (Honorable Mention LB/OL), Jackson Hobbs (Honorable Mention OL), Richie Sander (Honorable Mention WR), Derick White (Honorable Mention RB), Nick Tabanera (Honorable Mention RB). In addition Sam Byers was selected as the Kitsap Sun’s Player of the Year, and Bobby Reece and Jack Welker were selected to its All-West Sound Team.
Girls Soccer: After losing many great seniors off last year’s playoff squad, 2011 looked to be a rebuilding year for the Bucs. However, that turned out not to be the case, as our girls finished with an overall record of 6 wins, 5 losses, and 4 ties, including early season ties against the top two teams in the league. Although the season culminated in a 1-0 sub-district playoff loss to White River, the team had a great year! The following players earned All-Olympic League recognition: Sara Nash (1st Team GK), Brooke Tschida (2nd Team MF), Liz Lawrence (Honorable Mention DEF), Kristi Mellum (Honorable Mention C/M), Sarah Holt (Honorable Mention DEF).
Girls Swim: This year’s team delivered several outstanding individual performances and school records, including 2 district qualifying times, 5 school records, and 33 personal bests in a 101-66 team win over Klahowya! The team also sent 8 swimmers to the state meet, where the 200 Medley relay team consisting of Miranda Hoffer, Katherine Andersen, Annika Barrett, and Nicole Avila qualified for finals – the first time is KHS history that a swim team or individual has done so!
Boys Tennis: This season brought a coaching change and many new athletes as Coach Vic Nelson took over the helm of the boys tennis program. After a slow start, the team’s confidence and skills improved as the season progressed, culminating in a very respectable 5-3 league record. A few athletes just missed qualifying for the district tournament in the spring, but next year promises to deliver even more success as many fine athletes return.
Volleyball: A coaching change and plenty of hard work by our girls resulted in the biggest turnaround in our volleyball program’s history as the team finished with their first winning season ever! This year’s team fielded competitive teams at the varsity, JV, and C levels, and the excitement built throughout the season as the girls improved enough to earn a berth into the sub-district playoffs. Although the girls did not advance to districts, they have much to be proud of and build on! The following players earned All-Olympic League recognition: Sarah McMullen (2nd Team L), Kimmie Gerken (Honorable Mention S), Brooke Haag (Honorable Mention OH).
