Washington Green Schools

Breidablik has joined over a hundred schools state-wide that have become Green Schools. Our goal is to reduce our environmental and carbon footprint; helping the planet and reducing operating costs!

The Washington Green Schools Initiative

Mission

Provide Washington schools with the tools and support needed to:

·                   Integrate a focus on environmental sustainability both inside and outside the classroom

·                   Take action that results in environmentally responsible facilities

Vision

All Washington schools:

·                   Practice resource conservation and protection, and toxics reduction.

·                   Provide a climate where students are engaged as environmental stewards.

During the 2009-10 school year, Breidablik students in fourth and fifth grades studied Water Quality and Conservation in order to complete the first level of a Washington Green School. We completed a building and grounds assessment and learned

  • Our school water comes from a municipal water supply, Kitsap PUD
  • Breidablik used 565,937 gallons of water in 2009 (an average of 1600 gallons per person!) for a cost of $3,975.98
  • Our septic system and stormwater runoff  eventually end up in Jump Off Joe Creek and then on to the Hood Canal
  • Jump Off Joe is our watershed address
  • That projects we completed this year, such as the rain garden and berm, improve water quality in our watershed
  • That Breidablik has amazing support from families, staff, and community groups

Breidablik was awarded Washington Green Schools certification for Water Quality and Conservation during an all school assembly June 16, 2010.

We will continue the process by achieving level 2 certification in Recycling and Waste Reduction during the 2010-11 school year. In following years we can certify in Energy Conservation, Transportation and Outdoor Air, and Toxics and Inside Air.
