This page will contain a list of common questions that have come up in regards to the band's 2010 band camp at Fort Flagler State Park. What are the days of band camp? Band camp will take place from Sunday August 5th through Friday August 10th. Why Away Band Camp? What do you expect to accomplish away that cannot be accomplished at the school grounds? Do any other HS bands have camps away from the school? Band camp away is positive for the KHS Band program for many reasons; -The band will not have to compete with school/recreational sports for a limited amount of field space at KHS. -Students will be in the Band Camp Experience for the entire week. Students will have more time to get to know one another because they will be immersed in a large number of team building exercises when not rehearsing marching material. -Students will be able to focus on the tasks at hand of camp without having to work around appointments, sports tryouts, etc. -A large number of bands around the state and the nation hold band camps away from school. Tenino High School and Kamiak High School are just two such examples. Is the camp school sponsored? The band camp is school sponsored and approved. All of the same paperwork that is required for a field trip will be required for this camp. This also means that all school rules will be in effect at all times. When on a trip like this, we are always representatives of KHS at all times. What is the cost? The cost of the camp will be $160.00/person plus the cost of individual marching expenses (spats, gloves, shirts, etc.) The cost listed above includes all food, lodging costs, clinician fees, and other expenses. Is there bus transportation? To keep costs down, all students will be required to find their own transportation up to camp for check in. The camp will end with a group performance/BBQ at Buccaneer Field at KHS on Friday, August 10th. Bus transportation will be provided from camp to KHS for the return trip on the 10th. Can students bring their cars/drive themselves? Can student bring Campers or RV's? Because of liability and security issues, students will not be able to drive themselves to camp at Fort Flagler. There will be no reason for any student to need access to a car during camp, as everything necessary will be provided. Space issues prevent students from bringing campers/RVs to the group site. What will be the student/staff ratio? We are planning on approximately 60 students for band camp. We plan on having 12-15 chaperones at camp at all times. There will also be guest clinicians throughout camp, increasing the staff presence at times. Will the band be performing publicly? Currently, the band will be holding a public performance on Friday, August 10th at KHS. In the past, the band has also put on a performance on Thursday evening that is advertised around the campground. What will be the sleeping arrangements? Students will be staying in to old military barracks, with one building for males and one for females. The barracks will be off limits to members of the opposite sex at all times. Will tents and sleeping bags be provided? All students will need to provide their own sleeping bag/bedding for camp. The band has reserved two barracks as well as a large dining/recreation building. Are there adequate shower and restroom facilities for such a large group? Camp will be taking place at a large group facility at a state park with ample restroom/shower facilities present. Each building has Students will need to bring clothing to cover a wide variety of weather conditions. We will march in all forms of weather, including rain, wind, sun, etc. Students will not need to bring swimsuits for swimming, as there will be no swimming allowed at camp. Some students may choose to bring swimsuits for bathing purposes. Will exceptions be made to miss camp for medical and dental appointments? Exceptions for medical appointments will be made on a case by case basis with the band director. While I understand how hard it can be to schedule such appointments, every absence of a band member for any period of time affects the entire team. All absences from camp may effect a student's position in the fall field show. My son/daughter has a sporting event during camp. Will they be allowed to leave camp to attend this event? As with medical releases, every absence of a band member for any period of time affects the entire team. All absences for sports will be made on a case by case basis. All absences from camp may effect a student's position in the fall field show. My family has a vacation planned. What will happen if my student does not attend band camp? Because of the large amount of information that is covered at band camp, a student who does not attend band camp will have a limited role in the fall field show. Band camp is also one of the requirements to meet the criteria for students to receive the PE waiver. Students who miss camp will not be eligible to receive this credit. Will there be a medical aid person on staff? There will be multiple chaperones with extensive first aid experience at camp. Will my son/daughter be able to take medicine with them during the camp? Students will be able to take medication at band camp. They will need to make sure that all medication has the proper paperwork and is checked in to staff when they are dropped off on Sunday. Will there be a way to contact the staff for emergencies? An emergency phone number will be provided to all parents prior to camp. Are the meals being cooked on site? All meals will be cooked on-site by chaperones with food handler's permits. All meals/snacks are included in the cost of camp. Can special diet students be accommodated? We will be able to accommodate all students with special diets. It will be important for the camp staff to know about such diets in advance of the camp in order to ensure that the needs can be met. Can we visit our son/daughter during camp? Because of the busy nature of band camp, there will be little time for students to socialize with parents/family members. To keep the students focus up, we ask that there be no visits from family members after students are dropped off on Sunday. Parents will be able to view the work done at camp the following Friday at the Marching Exhibition at Buc Field. Is there a contingency plan in case of rain? Camp will go on rain or shine. We will have access to an indoor recreation room in case of extreme weather conditions. Are there other activities planned for student free time? While the main focus of band camp is to learn the music and marching fundamentals, a good amount of time will be used for team building/bonding. Students will also have activities present during “structured free time” that could include hikes, beach walks, volleyball, etc. Most days will also conclude with a large group social activity. Will student cell phones and electronics be allowed? Students will be allowed to have their cell phones at camp and will have access to them during all meal periods and free time.
