October 2017

Dear NKSD community,

A wise mentor once told me, "if you don't know where you're going, any road will get you there." He was, of course, referring to the fact that without clearly identified goals or targets, a school leader will wander aimlessly without purpose. The result? You might strike gold by pure luck from time to time, but for the most part, you will struggle mightily... and systemic, purposeful, impactful change will elude you.

I have always believed in the power of goals. They help orient your work, they provide purpose, and they focus your efforts. This belief has not wavered since coming to NKSD to serve as your Superintendent. I have crafted five goals for this coming year. Each goal has accompanying metrics and action items. These goals emerged as a result of listening and learning with colleagues, community members, faculty, and staff about what they felt was concerning and what they felt was worth celebrating. My goals also reflect two important documents: first, they point towards the Strategic Plan for NKSD - which is our identified roadmap for the next few years. Second, my goals reflect the adopted state standards for Superintendents as stated by the Washington Association of School Administrators (WASA) and the Washington State School Directors Association (WSSDA).

Explicit alignment of goals (and subsequent work) is essential for an organization to work effectively - without intentional alignment, you have a lot of smart, hard-working people moving in different directions. This may lead to redundant work, gaps in the work, and conflicts in the work. The solution to this issue is to be explicit and clear about identified targets and goals. And so, after crafting my goals, I worked with NKSD department teams and leadership to discuss how we might better align our work. I shared my goals with the district's leadership team, after which they were invited to craft department team goals and individual goals that align to our Strategic Plan and my goals.

I am pleased to share that our teams produced strong goals, metrics, and action items that will challenge them considerably but that also demonstrate clear alignment of our work across all sectors of the school district. We are now pulling together in the same direction. While we have much to do in the upcoming year, and there will be the inevitable bumps in the road, I believe that this intentional alignment of purpose will give us the momentum to make strong progress in our efforts to help all students be successful.

You can find my goals in the agendas/minutes for our board meetings because my goals were vetted and approved by our School Board. However, in the spirit of honesty and transparency (and accountability), I have attached my goals for your perusal. I realize that my goals are incredibly ambitious, and they will likely take more than one year to accomplish. That said, with the support of the incredible team here in NKSD, I believe that we will make great strides towards achieving these goals in this current academic year. I look forward to sharing updates with you from time to time about both my goals and about our work in NKSD.

Thank you for supporting your student(s) and NKSD. I invite you to partner with us in this important work that lies ahead.

In partnership,

Dr. Laurynn Evans
