Last week, North Kitsap School District recognized our Community Leader of the Year, Michele Laboda, at the Washington School Administrators Association regional awards ceremony.  Michele was one of 28 honorees recognized across the Olympic Educational Service District, which includes school districts from South Kitsap to Port Angeles.

Michele is a consistent and persistent face in our schools and in our community.  As the Public Information Officer for North Kitsap Fire and Rescue, she works closely with our schools to provide fire safety education with our local fire fighters.

At any given time, you can see her in a classroom sharing stories with students as they prepare to meet fire fighters in their gear or teaching a class about how to safely walk around vehicles. On Read Across America Day, you will see Michele and her colleagues in “Cat in the Hat” hats reading to students.  If you have a student in a North Kitsap school, you may have been asked by your student to help carefully draw a map of your home, count the fire alarms and practice an evacuation drill.  This is an annual campaign that Michele thoughtfully organizes to ensure that families are prepared at home.

Michele Laboda’s work extends far beyond fire safety education and are too numerous to list.  She tirelessly volunteers in the local community.  Most noticeable is her work with the Village Green Foundation. Michele has been instrumental in the work to bring a community center to Kingston through advocacy and fundraising. The Village Green Community Center provides a place and programs for our community’s youth, families and senior citizens.  Thank you, Michele, for all you do for our schools and our community.
