snowy road Winter Weather Reminders

School closure, delay and early dismissal due to weather, road conditions and power outages are always a possibility in North Kitsap.

Road conditions may vary in different parts of our district so parents and guardians should always use their own discretion in determining whether to send children to school or pick them up early if they feel conditions in their particular area are not safe.

Because student safety is our number one priority and many of our parents/guardians are not able to return home from work to meet their children, our district will only dismiss students early from school in extreme situations. Parents should have a back-up plan if this happens. In the event of worsening weather conditions, the district may decide to release and transport secondary students (grades 6-12) early so that buses are ready to pick up elementary students at the scheduled time.

Where to find official notification:

The following are resources for updates from NKSD regarding possible weather delays or school closures during the winter months.
NKSD will not send out an official message that schools are running on schedule, although we may provide a courtesy reminder on our social media pages.
  • Website:  School closures and delays will be posted as a pop-up alert on nkschools.org.  Alerts will be posted by 5:45am when possible.
  • Email Alert: All parents/guardians and staff with an email in Skyward will receive an email from the school district via SchoolMessenger, our notification system. Emails will be initiated by 5:45am when possible.  If you do not have your email listed with your student in Skyward, Log in to Skyward, click "My Account" in the upper right corner, enter your home email and "save".  If you have trouble accessing this, contact your school for assistance.
  • Phone Alert:  Parents will receive an automated phone call to their designated primary phone number in Skyward.  Calls will initiated by 5:45am when possible.
  • Local TV and Radio Stations
  • Call the District Hotline at 360.396.3999 to hear a recorded message.

NEW!!!!  Sign up for Text Messaging!!
NKSD uses SchoolMessenger as a reliable and secure emergency communication tool.  We are adding text messaging.  With this change we can initiate messages simultaneously via voice, email and text.

To receive text messages please do two things:

1) If you already have your cell phone listed in Skyward Family access, great!  There is nothing more you need to do.  Parents/guardians who need to update their contact information can visit Skyward Family Access.  Once Logged in, select "Student Info" in the left side menu. When the Student Information window opens, click "Request Changes for (STUDENT FIRST NAME)" located in the upper right corner. Select "Family Information" from the drop down menu, then enter the cell phone number in one of the first two phone number slots. Click save and you are done! If you have trouble logging in to Skyward Family Access, contact District records at (360) 396-3588 or districtrecords@nkschools.org.

2) Text "Y" or "YES" to 67587 to opt-in!  For More information about SchoolMessenger text messaging, read this flyer.

Snow Routes

This year the transportation department has created snow routes by school.  When buses are not able to traverse their regular routes, families will be notified that buses are running on "snow routes".

We strongly recommend that families print out snow routes for their school now (visit the snow routes page), so you will have this information handy in the event of a power outage or internet issues.

When buses use snow routes, buses will deliver students at the end of the day to the same stop they were picked up at in the morning.

Learn More About Weather Delays, School Closures and Early Dismissals

Visit the "Closures, Delays, Early Dismissals" page of our website to learn about how we make the decision to close or delay school, what types of closures or delays we use, and more.

With 110 square miles of land and several micro-climates within the NKSD boundaries, it is possible that some small areas may be experiencing hazardous road conditions for a short period of time, while the majority of the district is not experiencing any hazardous road conditions. We appreciate your understanding and patience when winter weather impacts our schools!
