The Transportation Department of the North Kitsap School District (NKSD) is dedicated to the safe and punctual commute of its students. Their main goal is to offer a dependable and proficient service for student transportation. The team, comprised of drivers, mechanics, trainers, and office staff, works closely together to maintain the highest standard of service.

Annually, this department efficiently manages the transportation of 5,000 students over an astounding 728,000 miles. To illustrate this achievement, consider that the distance covered is roughly equivalent to making three trips to the moon.

Safety

School bus safety extends beyond the ride itself and involves paying attention to the area surrounding the bus and understanding school bus stop rules. With guidelines from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the NKSD Transportation Team shares crucial safety measures, such as early arrival at the bus stop, understanding school bus lights, the illegality of school bus passing, and the unique safety design features of school buses.

Bicycling to School Safely Image

Riding a bicycle to school offers numerous benefits, but safety is paramount, requiring adherence to key guidelines such as following road rules, choosing appropriate riding locations, being predictable on the road, wearing helmets, using hand signals, and maintaining bikes. This article provides a comprehensive guide for the NKSD community to ensure safe bicycle commutes to and from school.

Safe Walk Zone Image

Walking to school offers students a chance for exercise, fresh air, and learning road safety, but it's crucial to adhere to guidelines like walking in groups, being visible, observing traffic, crossing streets safely, and obeying traffic signs and rules. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to model positive behavior and consult resources from the National Center for Safe Routes to School and our "Safe Walk Zone Maps" to ensure a safe commute for their children.

Danger Zone

The School Bus "Danger Zone" refers to the 10-foot area surrounding the school bus where the driver has limited visibility, posing potential hazards for students. Parents, guardians, and students are urged to understand and respect this zone, following safe practices like maintaining a safe distance from the bus, never approaching a moving bus, and never walking behind the bus to ensure student safety.
