Debbie Jo Rock, an educator since 1987, brings a unique global perspective to her role as the Library Media Specialist at Poulsbo Middle School. Her diverse educational background, including experience as a classroom teacher, consultant, and librarian, was further enriched by her tenure at the Franconian International School in Bavaria from 2015 to 2017. This global experience has shaped her passion for fostering a culture of reading and digital literacy at Poulsbo Middle School, offering the community a broader understanding of education.

Building a Culture of Reading and Exploration

Ms. Rock has been instrumental in creating an environment that promotes reading and encourages students to delve into new genres. By establishing strong connections between students and their preferred genres, she has significantly enhanced the reading culture at PMS. Her efforts include:

• Biweekly Visits from ELA Classes: These sessions utilize the library's resources extensively and include instruction in digital citizenship, media literacy, research techniques, and literature exploration.
• Enhanced Collection through Grants: With the help of NKSF grants, Rock has expanded the library's Manga collection and incorporated "unplugged" activities such as board games and maker supplies, which facilitate student collaboration and engagement.

Active Student Participation and Tech Support

The Student Library Advisory Team, guided by Ms. Rock, actively plans and executes library activities, events, and displays, including author visits and reading challenges.
