This April, the North Kitsap School District celebrates National School Library Month by highlighting the remarkable Library Media Specialists who enrich our schools.

Enriching Minds at North Kitsap High School

Lisa Schuchart has been the Library Media Specialist at North Kitsap High School for over six years, a testament to her commitment and dedication. During this time, she has transformed the library into a nurturing environment that promotes both academic and personal growth. Her initiatives, such as the Peer Tutoring program during advisory periods, have profoundly impacted student development. Under her guidance, the library's collection has expanded through a Title IV grant, incorporating diverse literary works and book club sets from the national Project Lit program. This has enriched the library's offerings with a wide range of perspectives and themes, which aligns with Ms. Schuchart's commitment to inclusivity and media literacy. Her efforts ensure that students have access to resources that deepen their understanding of diverse cultures and viewpoints, thereby supporting their educational journey.

A Rich Background in Education

Ms. Schuchart began her educational career in 1993 as a middle school Humanities teacher in California. She has a varied background in education, including serving as the Library Media Specialist (LMS) at Kingston Middle School from 2009 to 2017. She supported various elementary schools part-time during this time, gaining valuable insights into younger students' educational needs and challenges. This breadth of experience has provided her with a deep understanding of how to address the diverse needs of students across different age groups, enhancing her effectiveness as a high school library media specialist.

A Passion for Media Literacy and Student Engagement

Beyond her role in collection development, Schuchart is known for her unique approach to media literacy. She ensures students are proficient in interpreting and evaluating information across all formats, not just traditional print media. Her collaborative efforts with classroom teachers are crucial in addressing students' individual needs, making the library a cornerstone of tailored educational support. Schuchart thrives in the dynamic environment of high school, enjoying the unique opportunity to witness and influence students' growth throughout their high school years.

A Welcoming Academic and Social Hub

Under the guidance of Ms. Schuchart, the NKHS library has evolved into more than just a place for books and study. It's a vibrant center of student life, radiating with natural light, modern technology, and student artwork. During two bustling lunch blocks, the library comes alive as over 60 students gather to study, read, socialize, or engage in games. It also maintains its reputation as a comfortable and inclusive space before and after school, a testament to Ms. Schuchart's efforts to create a welcoming academic and social hub with positive energy.

Deeply Rooted in the Community

Since 2004, Ms. Schuchart has been an integral part of the Poulsbo community, where her children have also graduated from NKHS. This personal connection has given her a deep understanding of the community's needs and aspirations, which she has effectively used to engage with students and manage the library. Her involvement in the community, including her participation in local book clubs and swimming groups, has made her an invaluable asset to North Kitsap High School. Her connections with students and staff reinforce her leadership role within NKHS and the broader district. Lisa Schuchart's expertise and dedication are instrumental in cultivating a library environment that prepares students to be active and thoughtful citizens.
