Government Shutdown Resources: A letter from Superintendent Rachel Davenport

Government Shutdown Resources: A letter from Superintendent Rachel Davenport
Updated

Dear North Kitsap Community,

As many of you already know, the recent government shutdown is having real impacts on families across our region, including some right here in North Kitsap. Whether you work for a federal agency, are a contractor, or know someone who is, this kind of uncertainty can create stress for families, students, and our community as a whole.

In times like this, our strength comes from connection. When we share, support each other, and use the resources available, we help everyone in our community feel seen and supported.

What the shutdown means for our community:

For households:
Families who rely on federal income, contracts, or benefits may face delayed paychecks, paused services, or sudden changes in income.

For students:
Financial stress at home can affect students in many ways: worrying about meals, distractions from learning, or reduced ability to pay for school programs and activities.

For others in our community:
When one family faces challenges, the effects ripple out to others. Our schools and community programs may experience more need for resources and support.

How we can help:

If your household income has changed or you are facing new financial challenges, please know you are not alone. We are here to help.

Our School Benefit Program is one important way families can get support. Completing the Child Nutrition Eligibility & Education Benefits Application can help with:

  • Free or reduced-cost meals
  • Fee waivers for school activities and athletics
  • College testing fee waivers
  • Access to before and after-school programs
  • Crisis and community support resources

Even if you’re unsure whether you qualify, we encourage you to apply. Every application helps your student and helps the district secure additional funding to support all of our students.

How to apply:
You can complete the form online through Skyward Family Access or request a paper copy from your school.

Need help?
Contact our Food & Nutrition Department at (360) 396-3279, or reach out to your school principal. We can help you with the application or connect you with other support services.

Looking out for one another:

If your household is not affected, please keep an eye out for those who might be. Check in on a neighbor, friend, or coworker. A small act of kindness; sharing information, offering help, or listening; can make a big difference.

You can also visit our Community Resources Page for additional assistance and local resources.

Together, we can ensure that no one in our community faces these challenges alone. The strength of North Kitsap lies in our compassion, connection, and willingness to step up for one another. As we navigate this uncertain time, let’s continue to show care, extend grace, and work hand in hand to support every student, family, and neighbor.

Warmly,

Rachel
