STEM Camp Ignites Young Minds with Science and Engineering Adventures
After a week filled with discovery and innovation, the successful completion of STEM Camp at Poulsbo and Kingston Middle Schools has left a lasting impression on students and organizers. This year's camp, powered by a partnership with the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Keyport and supported by a generous DoDEA Grant, provided 60 incoming third through fifth graders with a hands-on introduction to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
Throughout the week, the camp was divided into themed days, each designed to dive deep into different STEM fields:
- On Chemistry Day, participants explored the exciting reactions of substances like Magic Sand and launched their own Alka Seltzer Rockets. "I loved seeing how things change when you mix them. It's like magic, but it's science," one student remarked.
- Circuit Day introduced the basics of electronics through activities like building Paper Circuits and using Squishy Circuits. A third-grade camper shared, "I made my first circuit today! It was like magic, turning on a light all by myself!"
- During Engineering Day, students tackled projects such as building Toothpick Towers and designing Straw Rocket Launchers. Their sense of accomplishment was palpable as they shared, "Making rockets fly and seeing how high they go was the best part of the week," a young camper explained.
- Wave Day brought physics to life as students created Periscopes and UV Light Bracelets. "I never knew you could see around corners with mirrors until we made periscopes. It's really awesome!" a curious student said.
The enthusiasm and positive feedback from the students underscored the camp's success in making STEM accessible and enjoyable, prompting organizers to plan for its expansion next summer. The goal is to welcome more students and incorporate engaging and educational activities to enhance the camp experience.
We are deeply grateful for your support and interest in our STEM Camp. The promise of next year's camp expansion reflects a growing commitment to fostering a nurturing environment where students can explore and deepen their interest in STEM fields. As this year's camp closes, the anticipation for next year's adventure begins, promising more opportunities for discovery and excitement in science and technology.
