High School Curriculum Adoption Preview
Updated

Earlier this year, a team of high school AP teachers began researching the best AP US History, AP Government and Politics, AP Physics, and Clinical Psychology curricula currently available. Research included the following:

  • Developed criteria to help guide the review.
  • Engaged in discussion with AP teachers across the country and the College Board to determine the most viable programs currently available.
  • Analyzed specific elements of AP Course Requirements and College in the High School Requirements for multiple sets of curricula per program area.
  • Engaged our Instructional Materials Committee (IMC) for guidance and process approval.

The following texts are the final considerations for each program:

AP US History

Fabric of a Nation

In 2014, the College Board rolled out a new AP® U.S. History course, which centered less on memorizing content and more on developing skills. Since then, the course has been modified here and there, but very little has changed in AP® textbooks—content is still king—until now. Fabric of a Nation is the first book to truly embrace this dramatic shift in the AP® course and how history is taught.

AP Physics–Principles with Applications, 7th Edition

Giancoli’s text is a trusted classic, known for its elegant writing, clear presentation, and quality of content.  Using concrete observations and experiences students can relate to, the text features an approach that reflects how science is actually practiced:  it starts with the specifics, then moves to the great generalizations and the more formal aspects of a topic to show students why we believe what we believe.

AP Government and Politics

American Politics and Government Today: AP Edition

American Politics and Government Today teaches students exactly what they need to know to succeed in the AP® course and become informed citizens. The part structure and chapter organization clearly map onto the five AP® U.S. Government and Politics units, for close alignment with the course framework. Integrated policy coverage throughout allows students to see how social, economic, and foreign policy all relate to real-life situations, while AP®-style multiple-choice questions and the full range of free-response questions offer students practice opportunities at the end of each chapter.

Clinical Psychology

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders V-TR

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-5-TR), is the most comprehensive, current, and critical resource for clinical practice available to today's mental health clinicians and researchers. Since DSM-5 was published in 2013, DSM-5-TR includes the fully revised text and references, updated diagnostic criteria, and ICD-10-CM codes. It features a new disorder, Prolonged Grief Disorder, as well as codes for suicidal behavior available to all clinicians of any discipline without the requirement of any other diagnosis.

Curriculum Adoption Process

The review and analysis phase with our school teams will conclude in May.  Input collected from our research team, the Adoption Team, and the community will be reviewed and shared with our IMC.

Based on the input collected, one curriculum will be chosen to move forward for introduction to the School Board at the June 12th meeting.

The School Board will vote on the recommendation to adopt on June 26th.

Once approved and purchased, teacher training will begin.
