School Board Overview

The North Kitsap School District Board of Directors was established by the Washington State Legislature and is comprised of five members who are elected by all North Kitsap voters, regardless of their geographical area within the district. Board members serve staggered four-year terms and may run for re-election for successive terms. Every year, the Board elects officers including the president, vice-president, and legislative representative. It is important to note that North Kitsap School Board members currently serve without pay.

The Role of the School Board

The role of the school board is to govern the school district by setting policies and making decisions that shape the education of students. This includes adopting and revising budgets, hiring and evaluating the Superintendent, and ensuring that the needs of the community are being met. The school board also serves as a liaison between the community and the school district, keeping the public informed about the district's activities and progress. Ultimately, the school board is responsible for ensuring that students receive a high-quality education and preparing them for success in the future.

Some key responsibilities of the school board include:

  • Establishing policies and guidelines that promote student success and well-being
  • Hiring and evaluating the superintendent
  • Adopting and overseeing the district budget
  • Ensuring that the district meets legal and regulatory requirements
  • Advocating for the needs of the district and its students with local, state, and federal policymakers
  • Engaging with parents, community members, and other stakeholders to build support for the district and its goals
  • Monitoring student achievement data and using that data to inform district decision-making
  • Ensuring that all students have access to high-quality educational opportunities, regardless of their backgrounds or circumstances.

Board Meetings

The NKSD School Board typically holds meetings on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month, although there may be some exceptions. In addition to these meetings, the Board also hosts community meetings and work study sessions throughout the school year.
