School Funding Measures

While the state of Washington provides some funding for K-12 education, it is often not enough to fully support all of the programs and services that schools provide. Local levy funding allows school districts to raise additional funds that can be used to supplement state funding and provide additional resources for students. Local levy funding can be used to support a wide range of programs, technology, and services that help to maintain or improve educational quality. This can include things like hiring additional teachers, providing additional resources for students with special needs, and funding extracurricular activities like sports and music programs. Local levy funding can also be particularly important for school districts that are facing budget shortfalls. When the state or federal funding for education is cut or otherwise reduced, local levy funding can help to ensure that schools are still able to provide high-quality education to their students.

BONDS ARE FOR BUILDING; LEVIES ARE FOR LEARNING

Bonds are for building. The state does not fund our school buildings' maintenance, repair, replacement, or construction. That is why districts rely on bonds to complete these projects. Bonds help ensure our facilities are up-to-date and can support the education of all students.

Levies are for learning. Levies provide funding for the critical day-to-day operations of the district. They fund staffing positions like nurses, counselors, paraeducators, and teachers. They also support extracurricular activities, technology, and safety and security updates.

2022 Levies

On February 8, 2022, North Kitsap voters approved two propositions aimed at ensuring the continued provision of high-quality education in the district. The first proposition, the Replacement Educational Program, and Operations (EP&O) Levy, aims to maintain funding for the district's day-to-day operations, including classroom instruction, extracurricular programs, and support services. The levy will provide critical funding for teachers, curriculum development, technology, and other essential resources necessary for delivering a 21st-century education.

The second proposition, the Replacement Facilities, and Technology Capital Projects Levy provided funding for necessary improvements to the district's infrastructure and technology. This levy will help ensure that the district's schools are maintained to the highest standards of safety, comfort, and security. It will also fund important technology upgrades to ensure that students and staff have access to the latest tools and resources necessary for effective teaching and learning.

Thanks to the support of the local community, North Kitsap School District can continue to provide high-quality teaching and learning for its students. The passage of these propositions will help ensure that the district can continue to deliver on its mission of preparing students to be successful and engaged citizens of the 21st century.
