Bright Beginnings and New Adventures!
A note to families and caregivers: Starting elementary school is a big step for your child, and we know you might have many questions. You may wonder how your child will do in a classroom group if they’ll make friends, or how they will adapt to a new environment. Are they ready? Will their teachers help them feel comfortable, calm, and challenged?
This is an important time for your child to learn and grow in a new community. Your child will develop essential skills with the support of our dedicated teachers, their classmates, and you. They will learn to read, write, speak, count, solve problems, ask questions, and explore the world around them.
At North Kitsap Elementary Schools, we provide a comprehensive and nurturing educational experience using the following adopted curriculum:
- English Language Arts: Our students engage in CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts), a program designed to build strong reading, writing, and language skills. Here is the link to the CKLA Family Hub
- Mathematics: In Kindergarten math, students will build on their foundational understanding to:
- Know number names and count up to 100
- Count objects and compare quantities up to 20. Compare numerals up to 10
- Understand adding and subtracting
- Learn addition and subtraction facts up to 5
- Break down numbers from 11 to 19 to understand place value
- Identify and describe 2D and 3D shapes
Using iReady Mathematics, we tailor math instruction to meet each child’s individual learning needs, ensuring a solid foundation in math concepts. Here is the link to the iReady Family Center
- Science: Our Mystery Science program offers hands-on, exciting explorations of the natural world, sparking curiosity and a love for science. Mystery Science is a hands-on curriculum that is fully aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
- Mystery Science’s units of study contain:
- Hands-on activities with EVERY lesson
- Engaging, real-world investigative phenomena
- Thoughtful discussions to build background knowledge
- Curated, cross-curricular extensions: Mystery Science also offers the Anchor Layer, which enriches the unit with an anchoring phenomenon, incorporates anchor connections after each lesson, and concludes the unit with a performance task.

- Social and Emotional Learning: We continue to focus on social and emotional growth using the RULER approach. This helps children manage their emotions, build positive relationships, and develop essential social skills. For more information on the RULER approach, click here.
We encourage you to work closely with our teachers throughout the year to understand the skills and habits your child needs to grow as a learner. Together, we will support your child's journey and help them thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
