Fourth Grade

Navigating New Challenges and Opportunities!

A note to families and caregivers: Fourth grade is a fantastic time for your child to grow and explore new interests! As they begin to manage and initiate their own learning, you might be surprised by the new things they discover. To support their growth, asking open-ended questions of fourth graders that can't be answered with just "yes" or "no", can be very helpful. At this age, we encourage students to describe their thinking by drawing, writing, or demonstrating their new skills and ideas in a variety of ways - putting to work the years of learning already accomplished.

Fourth graders are often excited to show what they know, so it is important for them to discuss their interests and challenges with their teachers. Children can make plans, think deeply, and understand more complex ideas at this stage. They are capable of discussing why they might be meeting or missing expectations and should be encouraged to think about how to improve their skills.

Our Curriculum for Fourth Graders:

  • English Language Arts: Using the CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) program, fourth graders engage with rich texts and develop strong reading, writing, and analytical skills. They explore various genres, enhance their vocabulary, and work on writing detailed responses and creative pieces. Here is the link to the CKLA Family Hub
  • Mathematics: With i-Ready Mathematics, students tackle more advanced concepts such as multi-digit addition and subtraction, basic multiplication and division, and introductory fractions. The program helps them deeply understand mathematical concepts through interactive lessons and problem-solving activities. iReady Family Center
  • Science: Through Mystery Science, fourth graders engage in exciting, hands-on experiments and investigations. Topics include physical, earth, and life sciences, and students are encouraged to ask questions, conduct experiments, and understand scientific concepts.

  • Social-Emotional Learning: The RULER approach supports students in developing emotional intelligence. They learn to recognize, understand, and manage their emotions, which helps them navigate social interactions and build positive relationships.
