Second Grade

Building on Foundational Learning!

A note to families and caregivers: Your child is ready for second grade and already knows so much! They have gained valuable school experience and knowledge in many areas. You might be amazed by their ability to remember facts. Their teachers recognize their keen interest in details and are helping them notice more about characters, actions, and descriptions in what they read. Encouraging your child to write and retell stories with more detail will enhance their learning.

Many second graders start to fear making mistakes. You can support them by encouraging them to slow down to give accurate answers to math problems, look up and define new words, and take care of grammar and spelling. They thrive on security and structure, so having familiar patterns and expectations at school and at home will help them feel supported.

Here is a list of our adopted curriculum to ensure high-quality teaching and learning for all second-grade students:

  • English/Language Arts: Using the CKLA curriculum, they'll develop their storytelling skills, paying attention to characters, actions, and descriptions in what they read. Encourage them to write and retell stories with more detail and explore the world through science and social studies. Here is the link to the CKLA Family Hub
  • Mathematics: With the iReady Mathematics program, they will build on their first-grade understanding. They will work with numbers up to 1,000, understand addition and subtraction within 100, and master facts up to 20. They'll explore the relationship between addition and subtraction, delve into multiplication foundations, and understand units of measure and geometric shapes. • Science: Our Mystery Science curriculum offers hands-on, exciting explorations of the natural world, sparking curiosity and a love for science. Mystery Science is fully aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Mystery Science’s units of study contain:
    • Engaging, real-world investigative phenomena
    • Thoughtful discussions to build background knowledge
    • Curated, cross-curricular extensions: Mystery Science also offers the Anchor Layer, which enriches the unit with an anchoring phenomenon, incorporates anchor connections after each lesson, and concludes the unit with a performance task.

  • Social Emotional Learning: Using the RULER approach, second graders will develop their emotional intelligence and learn to recognize, understand, label, express, and regulate their emotions effectively. This helps them navigate social interactions and build strong, healthy relationships. For more information on the RULER approach, click here.

Supporting Your Child:

Collaboration between home and school is key. Discuss your child's classroom experiences with their teachers to create consistent routines and set achievable goals. Celebrate their progress and encourage them to see challenges as opportunities for growth. Laughter and fun are integral parts of learning, nurturing a positive attitude towards education.

Looking Ahead:

As your child's academic and social skills develop, continue to foster their interests in all subjects, including Math, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, and the Arts. Together, we can support their journey towards becoming confident, well rounded learners.
