Third Grade

Uncovering Knowledge, Gaining Confidence, and Building Skills!

A note to families and caregivers: Now that your child is in third grade, they can put ideas together and learn independently. While they are still building skills in reading, writing, and the basics of math, third graders are starting to dive deeper into topics, moving towards more advanced problem-solving and research activities. These tasks require them to combine different abilities, making this an important time in their learning journey.

As they transition from "learning to read" to "reading to learn," you can support their growing enthusiasm and confidence by helping them organize their ideas and break projects into manageable pieces. Third graders are often eager participants in new activities, so helping them find groups and places where they feel comfortable stretching their learning and building on their interests is beneficial. They may enjoy tasks they can start and complete on their own, as well as projects with multiple parts they can work on with others.

At North Kitsap Schools, we use a variety of curricula to support your child's learning:

  • English Language Arts: CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) CKLA helps third graders develop strong reading and writing skills through a content-rich approach. The curriculum includes engaging fiction and non-fiction texts that build background knowledge and vocabulary. It also emphasizes grammar, writing, and listening skills, ensuring that students become proficient readers and effective communicators. Here is the link to the CKLA Family Hub
  • Mathematics: i-Ready Mathematics i-Ready Mathematics provides personalized instruction that meets students where they are and helps them move forward at their own pace. It focuses on building a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, problem-solving skills, and fluency. The interactive lessons and real-world problem-solving activities help third graders develop confidence and proficiency in math. iReady Family Center
  • Science: Mystery Science Mystery Science offers hands-on, inquiry-based science lessons that spark curiosity and encourage exploration. The curriculum covers various topics such as life, earth, and physical sciences, providing students with opportunities to conduct experiments, make observations, and draw conclusions. This approach helps third graders develop critical thinking and scientific reasoning skills.

  • Social Emotional Learning: RULER RULER is an evidence-based approach to social-emotional learning that helps students recognize, understand, label, express, and regulate their emotions. By integrating RULER into the classroom, we aim to create a positive learning environment where third graders can develop emotional intelligence, build healthy relationships, and improve their overall well-being.
