The Options K-8 program is a multiage learning community that cultivates independent learners’ curiosity and creativity by fostering long-lasting relationships with peers, teachers, and community from kindergarten through 8th grade. The multi-age setting allows students to interact with content, concepts, and standards that meet their intellectual needs and interests regardless of their chronological age. Student voice and choice are honored through instructional approaches based on student choices, interests, passions, and ambitions. Learning experiences connect students to their local area in meaningful ways, allowing them to participate in service components specific to local or regional geography, sociology, ecology, politics, and other dynamics.
Students who thrive in the Options K-8 program prefer to learn with peers in cooperative groups, utilizing learner-centered approaches. They enjoy interacting with students of all ages and backgrounds and adults from the learning community who assist with activities. Additionally, they work towards personal responsibility and set goals without competition or external rewards.
The Options K-8 program relies heavily on parental involvement to help create a multi-age learning environment that is supported by the community. The unique learning opportunities of the program are made possible by this rich history of parental involvement.
