The Path to Becoming a "Highly Qualified" Paraeducator at NKSD
At North Kitsap School District (NKSD), we deeply value the vital role paraeducators play within our classrooms and the wider community. To reinforce the importance of this position, we require all our paraeducators to achieve a "highly qualified" status. This can be accomplished by earning a minimum of 72 college credits (from 100 level or higher courses) or by successfully completing the ParaPro Assessment test specifically designed for paraeducators.
If you opt to take the assessment route, here are some steps to guide you:
-
Preparation: Begin your journey by adequately preparing for the ParaPro Assessment test. To aid you in this preparation, Educational Testing Service (ETS) provides study materials, tutorials, and an interactive practice test. You can find these resources here.
-
Test Scheduling: After a thorough preparation, you'll need to schedule your test. Heather Archut at the Olympic Education Service Department (OESD) can help you with this step. You can reach her via email at harchut@oesd114.org or by phone at 360-405-5801. You also have the option to schedule your test directly on the OESD website.
At NKSD, we highly appreciate the contributions of paraeducators to our educational ecosystem. By becoming "highly qualified", you will not only enhance your professional development but also contribute significantly to the thriving learning environment we endeavor to create for our students.

What is the hiring process at NKSD?
Who can I contact if I have further questions?
Is it necessary to have a personal email address to use the application system, or can I utilize another person's email address?
To ensure secure and clear communication, it's crucial to provide a personal email address when applying through our online system. Using someone else's email might lead to missed or delayed notifications. If you do not have an email address, there are several providers that offer free email accounts, such as Google, Yahoo, and Outlook.
If a job posting is marked as "open until filled," what is the best time to submit my application to ensure it gets considered?
For job postings that are "open until filled," it's advisable to submit your application as soon as possible. While there isn't a specific closing date, the hiring process could begin at any time, and the position may be filled once a qualified candidate is identified. Therefore, prompt application submission increases the likelihood of your application being reviewed.
After the job posting has closed, how can I keep track of the status of my application?
Typically, the screening of applications commences after the job posting closes and may take 1-2 weeks. Once the screening committee has reviewed all applications, only those candidates who have been selected for an interview will be contacted directly. If you have not been selected for an interview, you will receive an email update once the position has been filled. It's always advisable to monitor your email regularly for updates regarding your application status.
If I wish to apply for another position, is the information from my previous application saved?
Yes, most of the information that you provide when filling out an application is saved in your applicant profile for convenience when applying for other positions in the future. The sections such as "Name and Contact Information," "Education History," "Certifications/Licenses," and "Employment History" are automatically populated each time you start a new application, using the most recent data you provided.
However, please remember to update this information as necessary each time you apply for a new position, as your profile will be updated to reflect these changes and saved for subsequent applications.
It's also important to note that the "General Questions" section will need to be filled out each time you apply for a new job as these responses do not carry over from one application to another.
Regarding the "Attachments" section, this is job-specific and your previous responses will only populate if you are applying for another job with identical attachment requirements. For example, if you previously applied for a Math teaching job and are now applying for another Math teaching role with the same attachment requirements, your previous answers will automatically fill in when you begin the new application. However, you are free to modify these responses before submitting the new application.
Please note that when applying for multiple positions concurrently that require the same specific attachments, any changes you make to one application will affect the others. The system presumes you want to use the same attachments for all applications with identical attachment lists. Once the application deadline for a submitted application has passed, that application is locked and you can then modify attachments for similar open applications.
Remember to carefully review and update your information for each individual application before submission. After submission, applications are locked and cannot be modified.
Can I apply for several position at once?
While you are welcome to apply for multiple positions, you can only apply for one position at a time. As mentioned earlier, most of your application material is saved and will automatically populate when you start an application for a new job. If the "General Questions" and "Attachments" lists are identical for each job, your application for the new job will be pre-filled. However, you will want to bear in mind the "Important Note" mentioned above regarding modifications to attachments for positions with identical requirements. Always ensure to review and tailor each application to the specific job before submitting.
If my Washington State teaching or administrator credential is still pending, am I eligible to apply? How should I note this in my application?
Yes, you can apply even if your Washington State teaching or administrator credential is still pending. During the application process, when you arrive at the "Certifications/Licenses" section, you may indicate that your certification is pending. You can do this by adding a note in the "comments" area or attaching a Word document to the "credentials" area stating your credential status and when you expect to receive it.
However, it's worth noting that during the screening process, if there are other applicants with their certificates already on file, the screening committee may decide to prioritize those applications. Importantly, you won't be able to commence work until the district has received a copy of your valid Washington State credential.
What additional documents do I need to provide to demonstrate that I meet the "Highly Qualified" standards for all Paraeducator positions?
To show that you meet the "Highly Qualified" criteria for Paraeducator roles, you need to upload either college transcripts reflecting 72 or more college-level credits, or your Para test results. Unofficial copies of your college transcripts are acceptable for the application process, though official transcripts will be required if you are hired.
Please also note that a copy of your high school diploma or transcripts is mandatory. You can attach these documents directly to your application. It's crucial to ensure that all of these documents are submitted to provide a complete picture of your qualifications.
Why did I get an email notification stating that my application is incomplete?
An email stating your application is incomplete generally means there is missing information or required materials in your application. To be considered for any position, you must submit all necessary application materials before the posting closes (or before the "screening begins after" date on postings that are "Open Until Filled").
If your application is marked as "incomplete" by HR, it will be considered un-submitted. However, you have the opportunity to make changes and complete your application until the closing date and time, even after you've clicked the "Submit to HR" button. If you have any queries regarding this process or need further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact the HR department.
I'm applying for a Substitute/On-Call position. When will my application be assessed, and how frequently can I update and modify my application?
If you're applying for one of our Substitute/On-Call positions, your completed application can be updated at any time and will be reviewed by the screening committee as substitutes are needed throughout the year.
After your application is reviewed and your references checked, we will approve your file. Following this, you will be invited to attend a substitute orientation. At this orientation, we'll handle payroll paperwork, provide instructions, set up your password for the Sub Online system, and, if necessary, carry out fingerprinting (if you haven't been fingerprinted in Washington State in the past two years).
We hold these orientations frequently throughout most of the school year, and we'll provide you with several dates to choose from. You simply RSVP to let us know which session you will attend.
Once you have attended the orientation, provided all the necessary paperwork, and completed the online training component (information about this will be provided at the orientation), you'll be all set to start your Substitute/On-Call role! We appreciate your interest in contributing to our educational community.
