The Agriculture Exploration Program of Study

The importance of agriculture, food, and natural resources has never been more pronounced in today's rapidly evolving world. Recognizing this sector's critical role in our daily lives and the global economy, the Agriculture Exploration Program of Study offers an unparalleled educational pathway for students with a passion for agriculture and a desire to impact the world significantly. By joining this program, you become part of a global movement, contributing to the sustainability and efficiency of agricultural practices worldwide.

A Comprehensive Curriculum

The Agriculture Exploration Program of Study at North Kitsap High School offers an integrated and rigorous curriculum to equip students with the foundational knowledge and practical skills necessary for advanced studies and careers in agriculture and environmental science.

  • AP Environmental Science: This AP course, tailored for those with aspirations toward advanced studies in environmental science, offers an in-depth exploration of global and local environmental issues such as pollution, energy use, and resource management. The course combines intensive laboratory work, field investigations, and rigorous academic study, preparing students for the AP exam and college-level environmental science studies.
  • Animal Science: This course immerses students in the scientific principles of breeding, farming, and production of agricultural animals, focusing on critical topics such as genetics, nutrition, and the environmental impacts of livestock production. Students gain a deep understanding of animal management through a blend of classroom instruction, hands-on laboratory work, and practical field experiences. They can apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios.
  • Plant Science: In this course, students explore the scientific principles governing the breeding, cultivation, and production of agricultural plants, emphasizing crop genetics, plant health, and sustainable farming practices. The curriculum integrates classroom learning with practical lab work and field experiences, enhancing students' understanding of plant science. This approach ensures that students not only grasp key concepts but also apply their knowledge effectively in managing crops and promoting sustainable agriculture.
  • Introduction to Agriculture: This introductory course provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental principles and practices involved in agricultural research and production. Key topics include primary animal, plant, and soil science, alongside techniques in animal husbandry, plant cultivation, and soil conservation. By providing classroom instruction and hands-on applications, we equip students to address and solve real agricultural challenges, which lays a solid foundation for further study or careers in agriculture.
  • Natural Resource Science: This course provides a comprehensive look at natural resource management, focusing on the conservation, use, and improvement of natural environments. Students explore soil, water, and wildlife management and the sustainable use of these resources. Emphasizing practical application, students participate in projects that apply their learning to real-world scenarios, including resource management plans and environmental impact assessments.
  • Supervised Agriculture Experience (SAE): This program extends traditional classroom learning by providing students with practical agricultural experiences in real-world settings. It focuses on applying agricultural knowledge to manage projects, engage in agribusiness, and conduct agricultural research under the supervision of experienced agriculture teachers and mentors. SAE enhances students' entrepreneurial skills and prepares them for professional success in the farming sector.
  • Work Site Learning (WSL): This course bridges the gap between classroom learning and skills acquired in Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes, allowing students to apply these skills to practical workplace applications. The course is designed to help students earn academic credit while gaining experience in a field related to their CTE studies. Students must have previously taken or currently be enrolled in a qualifying CTE course in order to participate.
