A Comprehensive Curriculum

The curriculum at North Kitsap High School is broad, encompassing a range of courses that provide students with a deep understanding of both the theoretical aspects and practical applications of business and marketing. Courses such as Marketing, Store Operations, Entrepreneurship, and Financial Fitness form the core of the program, each designed to address different facets of the business world:

  • Career Choice: This course offers students a comprehensive guide to selecting future careers aligned with their personality, abilities, and lifestyle. It covers various fundamental topics, including career research, entrepreneurship, job application processes such as resume writing and interviewing, workplace ethics, and health and safety. Students will gain essential knowledge and tools to make informed career decisions and prepare for future employment, with the benefit of earning college credit to advance their educational pursuits.
  • Computer Programming and Game Design: This course introduces game programming, focusing on structured programming techniques and modular design. Students will build a library of game modules that they can use to create their games. The curriculum also covers the design of business programs. It provides insights into what it takes to pursue a career in programming. Through hands-on projects and collaborative learning, students gain practical skills and theoretical knowledge needed to succeed in programming.
  • Financial Fitness: This personal finance course explores essential financial topics such as consumer skills, banking, loans, credit, debt, and financial planning, integrating practical math components like word problems to provide a third-year math credit. The curriculum not only teaches students how to manage their finances effectively but also how to apply their mathematical knowledge in real-life scenarios. Additionally, students can join the DECA club, which allows them to apply their learning in community engagements, leadership roles, and competitive events ranging from local to state levels, enhancing their educational experience.
  • Marketing I: This course serves as an introduction to the world of retailing, emphasizing the critical role of distribution in the economy. Students explore fundamental business and marketing concepts, focusing on contemporary topics such as the 4 P's—Product, Price, Place, and Promotion—and conducting SWOT analyses. The curriculum also covers retail sales, advertising, social media strategies, business presentations, and management, along with deeper dives into entrepreneurship, ethics, career exploration, and the development of business and marketing plans. This comprehensive approach equips students with a solid foundation in marketing principles and practical applications.
  • Store Operations: This course provides students with practical experience managing a retail sales operation, explicitly running the student store. Participants gain hands-on skills in retail management, including market research, procurement, advertising, sales, and point-of-sale (POS) systems. The curriculum also covers key business concepts such as logistics, supply chain management, and bookkeeping, equipping students with the comprehensive knowledge required to oversee retail operations effectively.
  • Cybersecurity: This course introduces students to the essential tools and concepts of cybersecurity, focusing on developing solutions that enable the safe sharing of computing resources while ensuring privacy. By engaging in practical problem-solving exercises, students can develop the ability to identify and mitigate vulnerabilities within computational resources that attackers often target. The course also emphasizes ethical computing behavior and aims to enhance students' skills as responsible consumers, friends, citizens, and employees. After completing this course, students will be ready to contribute effectively to communities by building robust and secure cyber infrastructures.
  • Work Site Learning (WSL): This course bridges the gap between classroom learning and skills acquired in Career and Technical Education (CTE) classes, allowing students to apply these skills to practical workplace applications. The course aims to enable students to gain experience in a field related to their CTE studies while earning academic credit. To participate, students must have previously taken or enrolled in a qualifying CTE course.
