3D Art Program of Study

The Skilled & Technical Science Career Cluster offers many career pathways. The 3D Art Program of Study is one such pathway, which provides an excellent opportunity for students interested in turning their creative ideas into tangible reality. This pathway aims to develop artistic and technical skills and inspire innovation in three-dimensional Art in traditional and digital forms.

A Comprehensive Curriculum

The 3D Art Program offers a diverse curriculum that guides students through the foundational principles and advanced techniques of 3D Art:

  • Art I/II: This yearlong course begins by establishing a foundation in the visual arts, focusing on basic skills and understanding as outlined in the Art I description. Students then advance to explore a broader range of 2D and 3D materials and techniques, refining their design skills and tackling more complex compositional challenges. Throughout the course, students enhance their critical thinking by analyzing and interpreting both their artwork and others through discussions and written reflections.
  • 3D Design I: This course immerses students in three-dimensional visual arts, focusing on various sculptural techniques, including hand-building with clay, texture design, and finishing techniques. Students will also explore the history and theories of Art through multimedia presentations and investigate career opportunities related to 3D design skills.
  • 3D Design II: Building on the foundation set in 3D Art I, this course allows students to refine their skills and explore new sculptural media. Under the instructor's guidance, students select areas of interest to plan, design, and create advanced projects, producing three-dimensional works demonstrating technical refinement and artistic growth. Historical and contemporary influences are integrated into the coursework through class discussions and student artwork, alongside continued exploration of career paths in 3D design.
  • AP 3D Design: (College Credit) This advanced placement course challenges highly motivated Pottery, Sculpture, and Jewelry students to earn college credit by creating a comprehensive portfolio demonstrating mastery of various art concepts and media. Adhering to rigorous AP College Board guidelines, students' grades are based on their portfolio works, showcasing their proficiency and dedication to 3D design.

This comprehensive approach equips students with a solid foundation in 3D art principles. It encourages exploration and experimentation, allowing personal artistic growth and developing a unique creative voice.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the 3D Art Program are well-prepared to embark on numerous career paths where creativity meets technical proficiency, including:

  • Sculptors and Ceramic Artists express their artistic visions through tangible forms, whether for aesthetic, functional, or conceptual purposes.
  • Product and Industrial Designers blend Art, science, and technology to create everything from everyday household items to cutting-edge industrial equipment.
  • 3D Modelers and Special Effects Artists use digital skills to bring characters, environments, and visual effects to life for the entertainment industry.
  • Jewelry Designers craft beautiful and intricate pieces that adorn and delight, combining traditional techniques with modern technologies like 3D printing.

Preparing Future Leaders

The Program of Study for 3D Art is an educational track of exploration and self-expression. By engaging in hands-on projects, studio work, and teamwork with peers and professionals, students are encouraged to push beyond traditional limits and discover new opportunities within 3D Art. Using advanced tools and technologies empowers students to transform their creative concepts into tangible reality.
