Visual Media & Communications Program of Study

The Visual Media & Communications Program of Study is part of the Skilled & Technical Science Career Cluster. It provides an inspiring and comprehensive pathway for students who are fascinated by the power of visual storytelling and digital creativity. The program aims to equip students with the tools to succeed in the rapidly changing digital media landscape by combining artistic and technical skills.

A Comprehensive Curriculum

The program's curriculum is a well-designed journey that covers digital photography, video production, graphic design, and more. It provides students with a strong foundation in:

  • Art I: This foundational course enhances students' understanding and skills in 2D and 3D visual arts, employing a variety of media, including graphite, paint, and clay. The curriculum focuses on the Elements of Art and Principles of Design, encouraging students to express personal ideas and critically evaluate art, fostering valuable skills applicable across any career path.
  • Beginning Graphics: In this course, students deepen their knowledge of art elements and design principles using industry-standard software like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. They will apply these skills in practical projects, designing logos, stickers, and posters and incorporating digital photography to refine their graphic design techniques.
  • Digital Photography & Photoshop: (College Credit)This course equips students with fundamental digital photography and image editing skills using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. Students will explore key aspects of photographic composition, such as design, lighting, color, and depth of field, to enhance their ability to produce creative and high-quality photographs. Additionally, the course covers essential photo enhancement and editing techniques, providing a solid foundation for using leading industry software.
  • Video Production I: (College Credit) This course guides students through the entire video production process, from concept development with storyboarding and scriptwriting to mastering technical skills in camera operation, lighting, and audio recording. During post-production, students edit footage, add music, and create engaging video shorts while developing the project management skills required to execute complex video projects successfully.
  • Yearbook: This course allows students to produce the high school yearbook, teaching them valuable skills across multiple disciplines. Participants will learn photography, writing, graphics, advertising, layout, and distribution, using digital equipment to gain hands-on experience in all facets of the publishing business. The class not only enhances creative and technical skills but also provides practical insights into the workings of the publishing industry.

Each course in the program develops technical proficiency, creative thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills to prepare students for the professional world.
