Character Design & Creation: Special Effects and Imagination at Work at NKHS

North Kitsap High School's new Character Design & Creation (CD&C) class, led by CTE Art Teacher James Andrew, has had an exciting and creative start. The course trains students in various media to design and create characters, scenery, and props for video games, movies, and entertainment venues. Students learn the fundamentals of character and concept design in both 2D and 3D media, combining traditional art skills with video and computer design environments to achieve professional-level results.

In their latest project, students dive into special effects makeup, creating custom liquid latex appliances tailored to their faces. This involves making plaster casts of each other, a fun but challenging process that teaches them about precision and patience. Recently, the class achieved its first plaster positive cast, showcasing the detailed results of using alginate. While some plaster cleanup is necessary, the group is excited about the progress (and can confirm the bits sticking out aren't boogers—just extra plaster).

This initial special effects segment is just the beginning. The next phase will involve creating 1/8 scale figure maquettes of original characters students design. Eventually, they will bring these characters to life through claymation short movies, using their acquired skills. Mr. Andrew is thrilled with the students' enthusiasm and creativity.

With the passion and imagination thriving in this class, the future of entertainment arts in North Kitsap is set to be vibrant and full of innovative projects. Stay tuned for more updates and creative endeavors from these talented young artists!
