Medical Detectives Class at Poulsbo Middle School: Hands-On Experience with Vital Signs

At Poulsbo Middle School, the Medical Detectives class, led by Jessica Kenney, offers a unique hands-on approach to learning about medical science and diagnostics. Recently, students had the thrilling opportunity to practice taking vital signs on volunteers, a real-world application of their classroom knowledge.

The activity involved students measuring key health indicators, including blood pressure, temperature, heart rate, and breathing. These vital signs are essential components of medical assessments, and learning to measure them accurately is a fundamental skill for anyone interested in healthcare. The students used professional equipment and techniques, gaining confidence and experience as they performed these tasks under the guidance of Ms. Kenney.

The Medical Detectives course, part of the Project Lead the Way (PLTW) curriculum, is designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of medical science and forensic investigation. Students learn how the human body works and how healthcare professionals diagnose and treat illnesses by analyzing vital signs, performing medical tests, and exploring real-life scenarios.

Through activities like disease detection, body systems exploration, and forensic science, Poulsbo Middle School's Medical Detectives class equips students with practical skills and critical thinking abilities. These skills will undoubtedly be valuable in their future educational and professional pursuits in the health sciences.
